"The Road" by Cormac McCarthy

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food, and each other.

Tonight the Banachi Bookies reviewed the book "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. I think Kay put it best that this is the most beautifully written horrible book. Overall, I think everyone liked the book, but the writting style was very hard to get into. There are no quotation marks, no paragraphs and no chapters but the book is so well written that you just keep reading. Cormac McCarthy also wrote "All the Pretty Horses" and "No Country for Old Men" which won the best picture award last year at the Academy Awards.

They are making this into a movie and was supposed to be finished last year but IMDB.com puts the release date as October 2009. It stars Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron and Robert Duvall. I will definately be seeing this movie when it comes out.

I feel the same way about The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. I just finished it over Spring Break. It took me four months to get through. The author writes well, but the story just dragged on and on, and the ending was terrible. I feel like I wasted 4 months of my life on it! In contrast, I read Twilight in 2 days! I would not recommend The Story of Edgar Sawtelle to anyone!
